Books, books and more books!

We have an obsession with book ownership.

This is not to be confused with a reading obsession. Though we do enjoy spending time buried in a book, we seem to have a better knack for stockpiling collections that do nothing but gather dust on our shelves, ledges and in misshapen stacks in the corners of our rooms.

Whereas most people’s bucket lists are filled with future travel plans, experiences and adventures – ours is comprised entirely of

books we’ve bought and fully intend to read.

Ok, so there’s also a few amazing recipes on our bucket list too, but let’s not get caught up in the finer details.

Needless to say, our book-buying obsession reaches its zenith around this time each year when the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula hosts its annual “Used Book Sale Extravaganza.”

Just the categories of books available this year is enough to send us into convulsions: Fantasy, mystery, thriller, horror, science fiction, romance, children’s books, Westerns, reference, cookbooks, spiritual, self-help, gardening, animals, sports, poetry, how-to’s plus that catch-all category the Missoulian classified last year as “amusing obscurities.”

It doesn’t matter that we haven’t ready ANY of the dozen or so books we picked up this fall during Hasting’s going-out-of-business sale. We’re ready for more. Always.

So here’s the skinny on the big sale:

It runs Thursday through Sunday at the Fort’s Heritage Hall, which is the big yellow mansion-looking building at 30 Fort Missoula Road.

Every book except those stocked on the “specialty” table will sale for $1.50 per inch – and all proceeds will fund the museum’s new exhibits, the restoration and preservation of historic buildings and creating educational programming for all ages.

The sale starts at 10 am each day and runs until 7 pm Thursday, 5 pm Friday and Saturday and ends early at 2 pm Sunday.

Sunday is also “Super Bargain Bag Day,” with all books going for $10 per bag.

For more information, you can check out the event’s Facebook page HERE or you can call sale coordinator Jessie Rogers at 728-3476, ext. 5. She can also be reached at

Have fun, and of course always, always, read responsibly!
