Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!

Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association, we will feature a new western Montana trail and then give one lucky listener some cool goodies to help them embark on their journey!

Our featured trail this week:

Whitaker Bridge Rail Trail

Super close to Missoula, it’s incredibly easy to traverse this quiet trail!

The Whitaker Bridge Trail Rail follows the Blackfoot and has lots of gravel beaches alongside the river, so it’s perfect for a kids, dogs and novice hikers. Perhaps enjoy family picnic or dip your feet in the water on a super hot summer day!

Roundtrip: 2-6 miles

Directions: Hop in your car and drive 30 minutes up scenic Highway 200, turn left at Johnsrud Road and take the winding road to Whitaker Bridge, where you’ll find a parking lot on the other side.

The trail begins behind a green metal gate.

It’s an easy railroad-grade stroll along the Blackfoot River, including magnificent cliffs, gravel bar beaches, and towering ponderosa forests. There is a parking lot, vault toilet, and concrete boat ramp suitable for nonmotorized craft.

Looking for a great place to camp? Six miles back, down Johnsrud Road is great campground, Thibodeau, with large spots. Tent & RV camping spots available.

Also, Corrick’s Bend (just a few miles past Johnsrud, before Clearwater Junction  and 6 miles down an unpaved road) is Alanya’s personal favorite spot along the Blackfoot!

Tip: Bring your Montana fishing license and get a discount on camping!
