Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!
Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association we feature a fun Montana trail and then give one lucky listener some goodies to get them started on their weekend adventure!
Kootenai Creek, Trail #53
Enjoy glimpses of the raging creek, views up scree slopes to rocky cliffs, and shady forest on a trail accessible – and spectacular – any time of year
Roundtrip: 9 miles
Directions: From Missoula, head south on Highway 93 about 6.9 miles past Florence. Turn right (west) on Kootenai Creek Road, which is marked with a brown Forest Service sign. Drive 2 miles to the trailhead, which has a handicap-accessible bathroom and space for about 15 vehicles.
What to expect: The trail is a bit rocky for the first mile and runs close to the creek, which has a strong flow year-round. If you are with small children, keep a close eye on them for the first half-mile. The next 3.5 miles are a steady climb on an easy grade uphill and at times a couple hundred feet above the creek.
The wilderness boundary is approximately 2.5 miles from the trailhead. At 4 miles there is a very small creek crossing, and about a quarter mile after that you’ll hit a marvelous flat spot high above Kootenai Creek. It’s great for a picnic or camping. The views from here beckon you to hike further west toward spectacular craggy snow-capped mountains.
