Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!
Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association we will feature a new western Montana trail and then give one lucky listener some cool goodies to help them embark on their journey!
Bohart Ranch XC Ski Center
Enjoy the wide open trails of this cross-country ski resort for breathtaking views of the Bridger Mountains!
Roundtrip: 6.6 miles
Total Elevation Gain: 1,400 feet
Directions: From Missoula, head east on Interstate 90 to Bozeman. In Bozeman, take the Main Street Exit (#309) and head west to N Rouse Ave. Turn north onto N Rouse Ave and drive for about 18 miles. It will turn into Bridger Canyon Road – and then Bohart is about two miles beyond Bridger Bowl Ski Area, on the left.
What to expect: Bohart Ranch XC Center boasts over 30K of groomed ski trails (with even more being added). In winter, passes are required to ski or ride fat tire bikes there, but in summer hikers and bikers can use the trails for free – just sign in at the warming hut.
This trail description will essentially follow the outer loop, making a right turn at almost every junction. But each junction has signs, maps and segment distances, so it’s easy to craft your own route once you are there.
Start out on the two-way trail by the warming hut.
Junction 3: Turn right onto the one-way trail. After the U-turn, start watching for Christmas ornaments and other paraphernalia hidden in the trees. This is a fun area for kids of all ages.
Junction 5: Take the short cut on the right, then right at Junction 9
Junction 20 (Jane’s Gate): Take a right onto Outer Meadow Lopp
Junction 21: Turn right before the warming hut and picnic tables (unless you want a break), and head uphill to the Lookout, which offers nice views of the Bridger Mountains at another picnic table.
Junction 33: Veer right onto Bloody Gulch.
Junction 40: Turn right onto Big Dipper. (Or take the steep shortcut in front of you.)
Junction 43: Turn right onto Logger’s Loop. You’ll stay on Logger’s Loop
for 4.3 km, bypassing Black Bear Loop. Note: You will want to keep left at the switchback turn (a right would take you through the green Forest Service Gate to ungroomed trails) and again at “This Way to Norway” (unless you’re up for adding some more mileage via these side trails).
Junction 53: Turn right onto Meggin’s Turn, drop through the steep Whiskey Gulch (a thrill on skis!), and then continue on back to Jane’s Gate.
Junction 20: From Jane’s Gate, stay on the two-way road back to the warming hut. This is the only time you do not take a right turn at a junction, other than on Logger’s Loop.
Bohart Ranch trail maps are available for download HERE or you can pick up one at the warming hut where you sign in. Also, be sure to check out the Bohart events schedule on their website to make sure a race isn’t scheduled when you plan to visit. They also post weather and trail condition info every day around 6 am.
Tip: On winter weekends, a free shuttle bus carries skiers from the Fairgrounds on Tamarack St. in Bozeman to both Bridger Bowl and Bohart.
