Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!
Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association and Bob Ward’s we will feature a new western Montana trail and then give one lucky listener some cool goodies to help them embark on their journey!
To celebrate the three-day Memorial Day weekend, today’s hike is a bit further from Missoula than last weeks:
Mt. Aeneas
The highest point in the Flathead Range, this hike is highlighted by amazing views of the peaks of Glacier National Park. Yes, the trail head is called Camp Misery, but don’t let that stop you!
Roundtrip: 6 miles
Directions: Camp Misery is reached by following US Highway 83 to the Swan River Elementary School, which is at an intersection with a blinking caution light. Turn north here on Echo Lake Road and drive another two or three miles to Foothills Road, where you will turn right and travel to Jewel Basin Road (Forest Service Road No. 5392).
From the Camp Misery Trailhead, go to the gated dirt road and being your walk!
What will you find? The road becomes a trail in about .8 miles, and then after a mile and a half it forks. The lower trail heads to Birch Lake, and the trail to the left swings back around to Camp Misery – so you’ll want to take the middle trail. At the top of the ridge you’ll see the Hungry Horse Reservoir in the distance, backed by the jagged peaks of Glacier.
Keep heading up the trail – and be sure to watch for wildflowers and mountain goats!
Tip: Bring some containers and glovers to pick huckleberries when they’re in season!
