Featured Trail – 6/10

Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!

Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association and Bob Ward’s we will feature a new western Montana trail and then give one lucky listener some cool goodies to help them embark on their journey!

Today we highlight a trail known for its vast views and beautiful spring wildflowers:

Munson Creek

Located in Lolo National Forest, this hike features an incredible diversity of flora and fauna in a relatively short distance.

Roundtrip: 3-6 miles

Directions: From the west, travel east on Hwy 200. A quarter mile east of mile post 62, and just after crossing Munson Creek, turn left into the trailhead parking area.

From the trailhead, the trail forks immediately. Sty left, following the blue plastic diamond trail markers.

What will you find? You’ll pass through open stands of D

ouglas fir, ponderosa, larch, aspen and deep cedar groves, each boasting its own variety of beautiful wildflowers and flowering shrubs. At about three miles the trail crosses into open meadows with dramatic views of the Cherry Peak Roadless Area. Or for a shorter trip, make your destination one of the cedar-shaded stream crossings along the way. What a perfect place for a summer picnic!

Want more? Continue another 3 miles to Big Hole Lookout (total 12 miles roundtrip).

Learn more about this trail, file your own trip report and photos, or check out some other great hikes at hikewildmontana.org

And don’t forget to tune in to the Trail 103.3 each Friday at 9:50 am for the next featured trail and your chance to win!
