They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
But apparently you can’t teach an old dog to do old tricks better, either. Or at least that was the lesson for our station’s general manager, Becky Smith, when she and her beloved Bassett Hound Buford competed in the Peanut Butter Lick at the annual Pet Fest event two years ago.
Becky’s Bassets: Buford, Boone and Bruce
Yes, apparently ol’ Buford was already so used to licking PB out of Becky’s mouth that he didn’t really feel the sense of urgency shared by those pooch’s who were experiencing such magic for the first time.
Ok, ok, so to be clear there was a spoon involved.
But still, the event was long over by the time Buford finished off that spoon. And while there is, in fact, video proof of this particular happening, we’ve been told it’s against our better judgment to post it.
The good news is, you just might get a chance to witness the excitement for yourself. The 13th annual Pet Fest is happening this Saturday, and the Peanut Butter Lick is again among the many pet-friendly competitions taking place in the day’s slate of Doggie Olympics.
Other exciting competitions: The Mutt Run – with a special Wacky Winer Dash just for Dachshunds – a “Best Dressed Pet” contest and “Obedience Baseball.” And while we’re not entirely clear which – if any of these – Becky will be enrolling one of her three hounds, we’re sure you’ll enjoy watching the action no matter whose involved!
But fun pet games is really only a small part of what Pet Fest is all about. The event is also about education and connection – your chance to learn all about good pet ownership, the latest in pet trends and happenings, and to get acquainted with the many pet service providers located in Missoula and surrounding areas.
There are tons of information booths and vendors where you can check out the latest in great pet products, not to mention nearly all the local pet adoption services will be onsite doing adoptions.
Admission to Pet Fest is free, but organizers are encouraging participants to bring pet food that will be donated to the area’s animal shelters at the conclusion of the event.
So mark your calendar and round up the hounds – Pet Fest happens 10 am to 3 pm this Saturday, September 15th at the Missoula County Fairgrounds. And if you see Becky there, please be sure to show her a more respectable way to feed peanut butter to the dogs …
