Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!
Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association we feature a fun Montana trail and then give one lucky listener some goodies to get them started on their weekend adventure!
Snow is still, apparently, a precious commodity around these parts, so it looks like we can still get some actual hiking in. This weekend, Craig sends us to one of his favorite four-seasons getaways – the beautiful, close and seemingly never crowded Big Hole area.
May Creek to May Creek Cabin
A short, serene hike, ski or snowshoe along a willow flat and creek – leading to one of the US Forest Service’s many rentable rustic cabins!
Roundtrip: 4 miles
Directions: Head south on Highway 93 all the way through Sula until it splits off east onto Highway 43. And then look for the sign to the May Creek Campground – that’s where you want to turn.
Normally you would find the trailhead behind Site No. 13, but during the winter season the campground is closed and gated. So you’ll park along the side of the highway and then walk to the campsite.
What to expect: Follow May Creek as it meanders along the willow flat to your left. About 100 yards in you’ll cross the creek on a new wood bridge. At 1.6 miles the trail opens up to a larger willow flat with beautiful views, and then almost a quarter-mile later you’ll see a sign on the right side of the trail that reads, “cabin”.
Cross the flat, following some tall poles with blue diamonds on them for cross-country skiiers and you’ll come to another wood bridge. Cross it and you’re at May Creek Cabin.
The cabin, which was refurbished in 2011, sleeps four people on two bunk-beds. There is no water or electricity, but there IS a convenient pit toilet behind the cabi
n.

Tip: The cabin gets enough cross-country ski and snowshoe traffic that most winter visitors won’t have to post-hole the trek. It’s rated as a “more difficult” trail and is part of a six-mile system that joins Cabinet Creek trail.
