Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!
Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association we will feature a new western Montana trail and then give you some helpful details and tips to get on your way!
This week, Craig celebrates the official advent of winter with a trek in the beautiful Seeley Swan Valley. Besides the incredible skiing on groomed trails, it’s an opportunity to show your support for a local town whose tourist season was absolutely devastated by the summer’s wildfires.
Seeley Creek Ski Trails
The trails at Seeley Creek are excellent any time of year – but during the winter users will find some of the best Nordic skiing on the planet!
Roundtrip: 11.3 miles
Directions: From Missoula, head east on I-90 and then turn off onto Montana 200 at Bonner. Continue down the highway through Potomac and Greenough until you reach the junction with Montana 83 in Clearwater. Take that highway north through Seeley.
Almost a half-mile past Rovero’s gas station and hardware store you’ll turn turn right on Morrell Creek Road. Follow that road for a mile and then take a left into the Seeley Creek Trails parking lot.
What to expect: There is a warming yurt near the parking lot as well as restrooms.
During the ski season the trails are groomed almost daily for both classic and skate skiing. Grooming is done completely by volunteers. Donations can be made near the yurt if you’d like to help with the cost of grooming.
The system includes a total of 18k with a fairly even distribution of easy, moderate, and advanced terrain available. You’ll find a 3K loop, 5K loop, 7K loop, and a 10K loop. A map at the trailhead shows loops, trails, and difficulty level.
You can review the maps in advance, as well as get an idea of trail conditions HERE.
Tip: Dogs, snowshoes, fat tires, and snowmobiles can find abundant places nearby to enjoy, but during the winter months these particular trails are for Nordic skiing only!
Learn more about this trail, file your own trip report and photos, or check out some other great hikes at hikewildmontana.org. And don’t forget to tune in to the Trail 103.3 each Friday at 9:50 am for the next featured trail and your chance to win!
