Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!
Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association we will feature a new western Montana trail and then give one lucky listener some cool goodies to help them embark on their journey!
Leverich Canyon Trail
A nice day hike south of Bozeman through a forest with beautiful spring wildflowers!
Roundtrip: 5.2 miles
Directions: From Missoula, head east on I-90 to Bozeman. Take Exit 306 onto N 7th Avenue and head south until it intersects with W Main St (US 191) and then turn right (west). Turn left (south) onto S 19th Ave and head just over 5 miles to Nash Road. Turn left (east) on Nash Road and continue another half mile to S 3rd St. Turn right (south) there, and continue another 1.2 miles around two 90 degree corners to the mouth of Leverich Canyon.
From there, follow the signs to the trail head – about another mile away.
What to expect: Head up the trail approximately 500 yards to a fork, and then take the left-hand path. You’ll traverse a well graded trail that winds to the top of the wooded canyon.
Expect to see lots of wildflowers in the spring and fall, plus breathtaking views year-round of the Gallatin Valley as well as the Bridger Mountain Range. Also expect to encounter mountain bikers pedaling slowly up the hill!
The trail passes an old miners cabin, and then near the top of the canyon you’ll reach a T-intersection. This is the turn-around point. Mountain bikers will continue down the west side, but its banked turns make it a little too steep for hikers.
