Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!
Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association and Bob Ward’s we will feature a new western Montana trail and then give one lucky listener some cool goodies to help them embark on their journey!
Today we highlight a trail traversed just last weekend by our Alanya:
Hall Lake
Venture along the crest of the Swan Range through noble fir and paper birch through the wooded Groom Creek canyon to the subalpine lake known for its amazing fishing potential!
Roundtrip: 8.8 miles
Directions: From Bigfork take Montana 83 to Swan Lake. Turn east onto Fenby Lane just south of mile marker 72, and then turn right at the Laughing Horse Inn. From there, follow the signs to the trailhead!
What Alanya found: “About a mile in, you will cross a small creek with a rope to help you. The hike itself, was a bit tough, for me anyways. I would recommend carrying as little as possible. It is absolutely beautiful with several types of scenery as you ascend 2,100+ feet. The hike to the lake is all uphill, but there are lots of beautiful shady spots you can rest at (I had to. Lots.) About halfway in, you will be able to see the stunning views of Swan Lake and the valley!
Camping is available right at the trailhead! Some lovely folks had even set up an area for you to tie up your food into the trees. (Hello, bear country!) There are several great spots with views of the lake. If you can, bring your fishing pole! Tons of trout in the lake. My husband caught one within the first few minutes!
We were lucky enough to encounter THREE mountain goats while up at the lake. It was a magical expe
rience. Anyone looking for a great getaway, check out Hall Lake.”
Tip: Plan ahead because there are no bathrooms or amenities at the trailhead! Also, due to the difficulty of the hike it’s probably best to plan to stay at the lake overnight. And don’t forget the bug spray!
