Trail Well Traveled – 6/2

operations866

Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!

Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association we will feature a new western Montana trail and then give you some helpful details and tips to get on your way!

With snow still in the higher elevations, Craig is keeping us down low again this week with an easy trek outside Kalispell.

Lone Pine State Park Loop

This close-to-town state park is where locals come to to show off the views to visitors or to run the trails.

Round Trip: 3.4 miles

Total Elevation Gain: 900 feet

Directions: From Missoula, head north on Highway 93 to Kalispell. At the junction with US 2, head west for 1.2 miles – then turn left on the US 93 Bypass for just under a mile.

At the traffic circle, turn left onto Foys Lake Road for 2.7 Road, and then, when the lake is on the right, turn left onto Lone Peak Road. You’ll see signs for the park.

Follow Lone Peak Road until it ends at a visitor’s center in just over a mile.

What to expect: Start by crossing the bridge just before the center to climb up to the scenic overlook on the Ernest and Hazel White Memorial Trail.  This short interpretive trail loops back through the picnic pavilion.

Continue under the bridge to start a much larger loop through the park on:

  1. Bearly There Trail

  2. Raptor’s Rest (but turn left after the bench on the top of Red Trail Cliffs, or you’ll end up all the way downhill on Valley View Road trailhead.)

  3. Cliff Trail

  4. Lone Pine Trail (This trail is really a road that runs alongside residential neighborhoods and gets a fair amount of road noise.  If that is unappealing, take the short cut  partway down Cliff Trail uphill to a bend in the upper reaches of the Lone Pine Trail.)

There are nice views from the trail that passes the Archery Range and climbs up to the cell towers.

Tip: The area is laced with trails, so be sure to stop in the visitor’s center to pick up a map. Although park rangers are working to get more signage up, a map will help you decide where you want to go and how to get back.

Learn more about this trail, file your own trip report and photos, or check out some other great hikes at hikewildmontana.org. And don’t forget to tune in to the Trail 103.3 each Friday at 9:50 am for the next featured trail and your chance to win!
