Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!
Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association we will feature a new western Montana trail and then give you some helpful details and tips to get on your way!
This week, we send you to a trail tucked away in the Gallatin Range south of Bozeman with great views and spectacular summer wildflowers.http://trail1033.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/History-Rock-to-Fox-Meadows.mp3
History Rock to Fox Meadow
Hike past History Rock, through meadows with big views, to the northern edge of Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area, with views of Mt. Blackmore.
Roundtrip: 6.2 miles
Elevation Gain: 1555 feet
Directions: From Missoula, head east on I-90 to Bozeman and take the exit to North 19th Street headed south. Continue through its intersection with Main Street for another 7.3 miles, and when you reach the paved Hyalite Canyon Road – just after it curves to the west – you’ll turn left (south). At about 8.9 miles, turn right into the History Rock parking lot.
What to expect: The trail begins by crossing a wide meadow. Stepp over History Rock Creek and dip quickly into the woods. Here, the trail turns left and uphill to History Rock, where pioneers carved their initials – including members of the Corps of Discovery and John Colter – can be found at the 1 mile mark.
Continue up past six switchbacks. At the top of the meadow after the sixth switchback, detour right on a narrow trail for a vista of Hyalite Reservoir. The main trail continues curving around the hill through deeper woods before emerging in Fox Meadow, where hikers will be treated to views of Mt. Blackmore. Take a seat here, enjoy your lunch and enjoy some of the best wildflowers in the state.
The boundary of the Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area is just before entering Fox Meadow, but there is no sign denoting it.
