Trail Well Traveled – 6/9

Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!

Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association we will feature a new western Montana trail and then give you some helpful details and tips to get on your way!

All you have to do is look at the creeks and rivers for evidence that the high-mountain snow is indeed dissipating. But … that said, the pack was extra deep this year, and so Craig is going to keep his hiking suggestions to the lower elevations for at least one more week!

Bass Creek Overlook

A short hike close to home with nice views of a beautiful Bitterroot creek.

Roundtrip Distance: 2 miles

Total Elevation Gain: 465 feet

Directions: From Missoula, head south on Highway 93 through Florence, and then about four miles past the last stoplight turn right (west) onto Bass Creek Road.

Drive two miles on the paved road and then continue straight onto the gravel road. A quarter mile in you’ll drive through the popular Bass Creek Trailhead parking area; 4 miles in you’ll drive through the U.S. Forest Service gate; and finally, just over 9 miles in you’ll arrive at the Bass Creek Overlook trailhead.

What to expect: From the end of the road, a very short trail on the left (southeast) side of the parking area brings you to a view overlooking Bass Creek.  There is a plaque and small memorial here.

The actual trail is unsigned and begins at the end of the road on the right (southwest) side of the parking area.

It climbs gradually for 1 mile through open Douglas fir and lodgepole forest with a scattering of wildflowers on the forest floor.  Enjoy occasional views into Bass Creek along the way, especially at the creek overlook from about 6,575 feet up ( about 1 mile from the trailhead.)

Tip: For those looking for a longer hike, consider Little Saint Joseph Peak, with 3,000 feet elevation gain and 5.8 miles roundtrip.

Learn more about this trail, file your own trip report and photos, or check out some other great hikes at And don’t forget to tune in to the Trail 103.3 each Friday at 9:50 am for the next featured trail and your chance to win!
