“The Wailers were now definitely the star of the lot.”
That’s Bunny Wailer sharing his memories of 1973 in a write-up for the introduction of the legendary reggae group’s Burnin’ into the National Registry in 2006.
Just prior to leaving the Wailers, Bunny and rising stars Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, took England by storm with a new, more militant sound.
From opening track “Get Up, Stand Up” to seminal hit, “I Shot the Sheriff,” the record marked a transition for the Wailers from peace-mongers to activists aroused by the civil rights movement in America over the decade prior.
It would also mark a transition for all three star players’ careers, with Bob taking sole rein of the Wailers shortly thereafter, and both Bunny and Tosh moving on to solo work.
Forty-four years later, Wailin’ still stands the test of times – making it to No. 319 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greateast Albums of All Time as well as receiving the aforementioned permanent preservation in the U.S. archives.
On Friday, Alanya will revisit the landmark album for her Vinally Friday selection.
Also on the turntable this week:
-Johnny Cash was only eight years into his long and illustrious career, but he had already released 18 albums when he hit fans with what’s now become a classic.
I Walk the Line featured mostly Nashville-centered re-recordings of the singer/songwriter’s earlier rockabilly hits. But with some of his more recognizable tunes – the title track, “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Get Rhythm” leading the way – it has become a very accessible way to introduce new fans to “the Man in Black.”
Craig will give the album a few good spins Friday morning.
-Robert will be hosting the station’s monthly Happy Hour event at the Top Hat, so he’ll cede his time to some of favorite tracks captured from Vinally Fridays past.
-Finally, Tommy will cap off the day with one of the more successful bands of the past year – The Revivalists, and their third release, Men Among Mountains.
Formed in 2007, the seven-piece New Orleans combo built up quite a following on the road before hitting the big time last year.
Named one of Rolling Stone Magazine‘s “10 Bands You Need to Know” in 2016, their first single, “Wish I Knew You” went on to reach No. 1 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart and still receives quite a bit of airplay on the Trail.
Take a listen and you’ll understand why:
Finally, it’s Friday! It’s Vinally Friday, only on the Trail!
