Vinally Friday – 8/24

Progressive bluegrass band Infamous Stringdusters first headlined River City Roots Fest waaaay back in 2010.

They were still relatively new on the scene then, but they’ve since become stalwarts on the live touring circuit – with several award winning albums to their name. Most recently, the five-piece picked up a Grammy Award for “Best Bluegrass Album” (2017’s Laws of Gravity).

No stranger to the Trail 1033 playlist, we are absolutely thrilled to welcome the Stringdusters back to Missoula this weekend to close out the 13th rendition of the festival this Saturday night!

Alanya will get the party started early with a few spins of some of her favorite tracks from across the span of the Nashville-based bands on this week’s Vinally Friday. Tune in 10 am to 2 pm for her selections throughout the morning!

Also on the turntable this week:

• If you’re missing your copy of the soundtrack to 1979 movie sequel “More American Graffiti”, there’s a good chance Craig’s got it.

And he invites you to file a rightful claim. Provided, of course, you’ve got some proof. And you can wait until after he throws down to kick off this week’s edition of Vinally Friday.

More American Graffiti – the soundtrack, not the movie – is 33-songs deep, most of which are rock and roll classics most modern music fans probably take for granted. The rest is comprised of either obscure tracks from beloved 1960s-era artists or beloved tracks from obscure, one-hit-wonders from the same.

Let’s let Craig, who admits the record was – like most his stash – likely stolen from a radio station past, simplify it:

“All I know is I get to play ’96 Tears’ by Question Mark and the Mysterians,” he said.

Good enough for us!

•Robert will follow up Alanya’s pre-Roots Fest party with selections from the most celebrated album of Peter Gabriel‘s illustrious career.

Released in 1986, So remains the most commercially successful of Gabriel’s nine solo albums – catapulting him into a mainstream star with radio-friendly singles like “Sledgehammer,” “Big Time”, “In Your Eyes” and “Red Rain.”

The album has since been certified platinum five times and ranked 187th on Rolling Stone Magazine’s ranking of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

• Tommy will wrap up the day with a few spins from one of this summer’s biggest releases: Dave Matthews Band’s Come Tomorrow.

Released in June, the album – DMB’s ninth, and first since 2012 – debuted at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 and its sales have already marked the biggest for a rock album in over four years.

Most of its 14 tracks have been staples in the band’s live set for years, some as far back as 2006. But the album format gives them new life as the band compensates for the loss of several players over the years – notably saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who died following complications from an ATV accident in 2008.

Moore does, however, make an appearance on Come Tomorrow. As does Brandi Carlile, who provides guest vocals on the title track.

Our best guess is that one will make Tommy’s shortlist. Tune in to find out!

Finally, it’s Friday – it’s Vinally Friday, all day on the Trail 103.3 …
