The Trail, in partnership with the Book Exchange, is excited to unveil the next installment of our Book Club series!
This month we’ll feature Norman Maclean’s “A River Runs Through It”
Based on Maclean’s own experiences as a young man, the book’s two novellas and short story are set in the small towns and mountains of western Montana. It is a world populated with drunks, loggers, card sharks, and whores, but also one rich in the pleasures of fly-fishing, logging, cribbage, and family. By turns raunchy and elegiac, these superb tales express, in Maclean’s own words, “a little of the love I have for the earth as it goes by.”
A River Runs Through It may have introduced many of us to Missoula…Whether it was reading this book in high school or watching a dreamy Brad Pitt on the big screen, this book quite literally hits close to home.
The Book Exchange recently acquired an extremely rare “first printing of the first edition” which they are selling for $1000; the average online for this edition in similar condition is $2500!
They also have copies of the newest edition with a foreword from Robert Redford on sale for $13.50, originally $15, as well as a number of other semi-collectible editions.
Don’t forget to log on to The Book Exchange’s Facebook page for more information on the novel and a discussion with other club members!
